It's mental health awareness week


At Wrekin, we believe that looking after our mental health is just important as looking after our physical health.

This year’s mental health awareness week is all about connecting with nature because of the benefits associated with embracing the outdoors.

We’re also running an art competition for any creatives who want their pieces to feature in our 2022 calendar. This year, Wrekin are looking for artworks inspired by nature, to find out more about the competition please click here.

Here’s how connecting with nature can support our mental health:

  • Nature has a calming effect on us and increases our levels of serotonin, lifting our mood.
  • Being in the outdoors is so rewarding and makes us feel closer to nature which improves our self-esteem.
  • Taking a break and embracing the outdoors can help us to switch off from the pressures of daily life, giving us the opportunity to revitalise and refocus our energy levels.

How you can connect with nature:

  • Find nature wherever you are: whether it’s a local park or your private garden try to take a break from technology and focus on the outdoors, listen out for the birds singing or appreciate that sunny day.
  • Spend time in natural spaces: the green trees, the natural forests or the blue waters make us feel at ease and lift our mood, go for a walk with a familiar face and embrace the outdoors together.
  • Try to make the most out of your space: grow plants, vegetables or get a bird feeder and support the production of your local environment.
  • Outdoor recreation: Walking, running or cycling are all great options and will help you to connect with nature. You can also take photos, draw or paint pictures of nature which will develop that emotional connection to the great outdoors.
  • Protect your environment: make a more conscious effort to recycle, make choices that benefit nature such as walking where you can and do your bit to preserve our outdoor space.
