Calendar competition inspires generations of creatives

Art and design students from Telford College are joining keen local artists to compete to be featured in a local 2020 calendar.

The Wrekin Housing Trust is looking to create a stunning calendar to round off their 20th birthday celebrations by offering winners the opportunity to see their work published and exhibited.

Katie Heighway, 17, an Art and Design student from Telford College has been inspired to enter.

Katie said, “The competition is a good way for me to experience how art can be a profession. I really love art and I’m planning further study. I enjoy getting out and about and will be entering a painting inspired by a visit to Stokesay Castle.”

Meanwhile older artists, who meet at the Trust’s Retirement Living scheme, in St Georges, are working together to create a joint entry and will also be submitting individual pieces.

Derek Kennedy, who has run the Hazel Way art group in St Georges for 14 years, said: “The calendar is always interesting; I enjoy looking at it from an art perspective each year. I have often thought it would be lovely to see something a bit different. As art has a lot of benefits and takes lots of thought and work, this competition is a brilliant idea. I hope it encourages and inspires lots of people to get involved.”

Kathryn Holmes, Marketing Executive for the Trust said, “We are lucky to be surrounded by some beautiful scenery. Entries don’t have be landscapes they could also be inspired by folk law, buildings or the people who make a community. Artists can submit work from any medium from pottery to painting. The judges will be looking for pieces which have been inspired by the areas of Telford & Wrekin, Shropshire and Staffordshire.”
