Recipe for Response Alarms

Dog with emergency pull cord

- via our Community Alarms (WATCH) and Assistive Technology

Ingredients:

  • People requiring reassurance in their own homes
  • Telephone with special doodar, mmmn…features
  • Demonstration area to show off the kit
  • Staff who know their stuff

Independence is really important to our tenants, and the Trust’s 24 hour WATCH (Wrekin Alarm Telephone Call Helpline) and Assistive Technology alarm service, is ideal for anybody who feels at risk in their home, through illness, disability or vulnerability.

The WATCH service works via an alarm unit that is connected to a telephone, with no need for special wiring. Assistance is available any time simply by pressing a single red button.

Assistive Technology

Assistive technology for Trust customers helps to overcome obstacles to independence and  well-being. Risks to independence can be managed either by using devices to make adaptations
to the home environment, or by using linked sensors which can control gadgets to communicate an early alarm to an expert support team. These are all connected to lifeline alarms, which many people have in their homes today.

Devices that the Trust offers include:

  • Flood detectors
  • Fall detectors
  • Smoke detectors
  • Heat detectors
  • Enuresis (bed wetting) detectors
  • Bed occupancy detectors - linked to a bed lamp which will turn and illuminate the room if the client gets out of bed during the night
  • PIR detectors with associated door contacts for client wandering
  • CO2 detectors
  • Gas detectors
  • Adverse temperature detectors

The Trust has a dedicated testing and demonstration area at one of our sheltered housing schemes, where we are able to demonstrate the latest kit to clients, families or other external agencies interested in the hardware.

We have a number of success stories including a young mum who suffers from Epilepsy who has taught her seven year old son how to press the button on the phone or her pendant when she is not well, and the lady who has trained her dog to pull the emergency cord if she should need help!

Through our partnership with TyneTec (equipment suppliers) and Astraline (call monitoring), the Trust is encouraging wider use of assistive technology as it offers opportunities for people to continue to live safely in their own homes for longer.

Jane McFadzen on 01952 217156 will be pleased to provide demos of this amazing equipment.
