'You're hired' – apprentices success at the Trust

02 September 2010

Two trainees taken on at The Wrekin Housing Trust three years ago are about to complete their apprenticeships and have been taken on as permanent, full-time employees.

Apprentices
Lewis Heston from Telford and Dale Wills from Shrewsbury started with the Trust in 2007. They've spent four days each week learning and honing skills with experienced Trust tradesmen, and one day at Shrewsbury College's Telford Construction Centre at Stafford Park studying for their NVQ in Building Maintenance Operations.
With their NVQ's and some real-practical experience under their work-belts, Dale and Lewis will join the Trust's Inhouse Planned Team, to undertake planned maintenance in some of the Trust's 11,000 homes around Shropshire and Staffordshire.

Lewis says: "It's fantastic that our time as apprentices at the Trust has led to us getting a full-time job. We'd both like to thank all the trades people who have helped us by passing on important tips learnt from their years in the trade, and for being there to provide guidance, help and support when we needed it. Whilst what we learn at college is great, nothing can replace the extra advice from someone who has years of experience doing the job".
Tim Munro, HR Consultant at the Trust says: "Hiring apprentices and investing in young talent helps the Trust to continue to the deliver the high standards we promise our tenants. Additional work for the Inhouse Planned Team has created the need for two new permanent trades people, and we're delighted that it enables Dale and Lewis to become fully fledged employees of The Wrekin Housing Trust."

The Trust has other apprentices, including twins Daniel and Jason Price who are in their second year with the Trust and will be continuing their training for a further 12 months as 'craft improvers' to build on the skills they've already acquired. The Trust will also be taking on three new apprentices over the coming months, in order to keep developing new 'home grown' in-house trade skills.
