From tubers to table
30 June 2010
Residents at Morton Court are embarking on a potato project, courtesy of our Tenants' Panel and supplier, Vaillant.
18 families within Morton Court, a sheltered housing scheme in Dawley run by The Wrekin Housing Trust, are sharing some of the free potato growing kits that were on offer last month. The kits were purchased from money put into a community fund by boiler supplier, Vaillant, as part of its sustainability awareness initiative. Vaillant has given control of the community fund to the Tenants' Panel, with the only condition that the money must be spent in the community for the benefit of Trust tenants. Vaillant will continue to add to the fund on a regular basis.
The kits were delivered to Morton Court last week, and 23 residents met in the communal area to collect their potato starter kits. Some of the residents were so enthusiastic about growing their own produce that they planted their potatoes that same afternoon.
Trang Shaw, Scheme Manager at Morton Court says: "The residents are really excited about growing their own potatoes. Many of them aren't as physically able to work in the garden as they used to be, so these kits are perfect with no digging, hoeing or strenuous work required."
77 year old Sylvia Williams, a resident at Morton Court, says: "We're looking forward to seeing the potatoes grow, and enjoying the fruits of our labour later in the year. It's nice that we're all working together on the project, and we've shared out the gardening work to suit our own individual abilities, each concentrating on the things we feel we can do best."
This is an ongoing project, and the group is planning a potato harvesting festival in the Autumn, as well as a Potato Party, which will include potato starters, main dishes and desserts! The residents will be collecting potato recipes throughout the year to use at the party, and aim to put together a potato recipe book for all to use and enjoy.
