The Wrekin Housing Trust's Tenants' Panel has been busy organising collection of potatoes from tenants who were successful in obtaining one of the free potato growing kits on offer recently.

The Trust's Tenants' Panel purchased around 150 potato growing kits, using money put into a community fund created by one of the Trust's suppliers, Vaillant, as part of its sustainability awareness initiative. Tenants interested in receiving one of the free kits expressed their interest by contacting the Panel.

Mr & Mrs Rogers from Dawley were some of the tenants to receive one of the kits, and couldn't wait to get planting. Mr Rogers said: "We're not at all green-fingered, so we like the fact that the kit is easy to use, and there's no digging or strenuous work required. We look forward to eating our own home-grown produce later in the year."

Each of the potato kits contained 15 potato tubers, 1 pair of potato cleaning gloves, 3 salad/vegetable seed packs and 3 re-useable potato grow bags. The Tenants' Panel also arranged for a bag of compost to be provided along with each kit.

Chair of the Tenants' Panel, Len Harley says: "We've had a great response to the potato kits offer, and all the kits have now been distributed. 'Grow your own' is very fashionable at the moment and a great pastime, with many positive benefits such as being outdoors in the fresh air and eating healthy home-grown food. We hope the potato kits will be something that all the family can enjoy, as children and grandchildren will love being involved too, and can learn more about where food comes from and how nature works."
