Driving smarter at the Trust

09 April 2010

A number of staff from The Wrekin Housing Trust took part in a special driver-training day earlier this week, to learn how to reduce carbon emissions when driving.

As part of their commitment to be a 'green' organisation, the Trust organised the day in conjunction with The Energy Saving Trust, who brought their driving simulator into the Trust's head office at Old Park, Colliers Way, Telford.

On Tuesday 23rd March, around 40 people from the Trust were able to practice eco-driving techniques on the computer driving simulator.

Nicola Brown, Marketing Manager at the Energy Saving Trust, West Midlands says, "We all like to think we're good drivers, but making some simple changes to the way we drive could reduce the fuel we use, save money, and is safer too".

Mick Brasenell, a carpenter at the Trust who tried the driving simulator said: "I'm really amazed by how much the way you drive impacts on the environment and on fuel costs. I'll be incorporating these techniques whenever I drive from now on – at work and at home!"

This activity is just part of a number of initiatives implemented by Shropshire's largest social landlord as part of their Environmental Strategy. The Trust strongly embraces its responsibilities regarding the environment, and is committed to working with the Energy Saving Trust and other eco partners to improve energy efficiency and reduce the effects of climate change.

Wayne Gethings, Director at The Trust comments: "The smarter driving training is just one part of making travel at the Trust more environmentally friendly. We've recently taken delivery of a new, cost effective fleet of vans with fewer CO2 emissions, plus implemented different ways of working that will result in lower overall mileage. These more efficient ways of working will all contribute to reducing transport costs and staying more environmentally aware.
