Trust to redevelop eyesore

07 April 2010

The Wrekin Housing Trust is due to demolish and redevelop a site in Wellington to provide even more quality, affordable homes for the area.

Outside the new Wellington development
Along with Lovells, who have been contracted by the Trust to carry out the demolition and redevelopment of the site, the Trust will be providing 20 brand new homes.

The new properties will be made up of 11 two-bed apartments, three three-bed houses and six two-bed houses. All will be built to meet Code Four Sustainable Homes Level 4 and also the Lifetime Homes standard.

Once complete, the homes will all be made available for affordable rent through the Trust's choice based lettings system, Choose Your Home.

All of the new homes will have allocated parking spaces and there will also be disabled and extra parking available.

The new apartments will have a sloping roof complete with living grass and solar panels. The solar panels could give a significant saving for the block, so reducing fuel bills for its tenants.

Councillors Andrew Eade and Eric Carter, who are both heavily involved with regeneration in Telford were invited to the site by the Trust earlier in the week to begin the demolition process.

Councillor Eade said: "I am delighted to be here today to help celebrate the very first phase of the demolition work on Windsor flats. The new homes will provide a much-needed lift to the current landscape and provide affordable housing for the people of Telford. I am looking forward to seeing the transformation of the local area and wish the developers, Lovells, and the Trust, the best for the build over the next year."

Jean Teichmann, Head of Development at The Wrekin Housing Trust said: "We are really pleased to be able to replace these old flats with quality new housing which will provide much needed affordable homes and also really improve the appearance of the area."

The Trust is utilising £1.3 million of its Disposal Proceeds Fund, accrued through Right to Buy sales, to provide the subsidy required for the scheme. Demolition starts shortly and the redevelopment of the area will take place over the next year.
