25 January 2010

We have been nominated twice in one month for our environmentally friendly credentials and efforts to reduce emissions and waste.

We were a runner up at the Inside Housing Sustainable Housing Awards in the Waste Initiative category. The judges were impressed with the Trust's efforts to encourage recycling amongst its employees, contractors and tenants. The recycling initiative led to over 60% less materials being sent to landfill and a greater financial saving, which has been used to fund various tenant events.

The Trust's second success was being highly commended for its environmental sustainability by the Chartered Institute of Housing. The Institute commended the Trust for its efforts to cut down on emissions, whilst at the same time improving facilities for tenants. A recent example of this work is the the air-source heat pumps fitted at Trust properties in High Ercall. The heat pumps produce electricity but create no emissions, making them a sustainable and viable energy source. The heat pumps also reduce heating bills, ensuring that the tenants who have them in their properties are not in fuel poverty.

Gary Komora, Building Services Manager, said: "Due to global warming, everyone is looking to reduce emissions and cut down on waste. The Trust has implemented a range of initiatives to do this, which will benefit our tenants and the wider community. We plan to continue this work over the coming years and keep our status of eco champions."

The website has a section dedicated to sustainability, offering advice to tenants as well as detailing the work that has been carried out already.
