04 November 2008

An ex-Mayor is absolutely overjoyed after being told that she can stay in Wem, thanks to The Wrekin Housing Trust.

Mrs Thelma Broom, who became Mayor of Wem in 2005 and was desperate to stay in the town, contacted the Trust after struggling to find somewhere for herself and her husband to live when they retired. As a Scheme Manager for Anchor Trust, Mrs Broom has lived and worked at Roden Lodge for over 24 years and was worried about what would happen after her retirement.

Mrs Broom and her husband had accepted that they would have to move to a retirement village in Oswestry as this seemed to be their only option aside from a hostel.

Luckily, a friend from Wem Town Council recommended The Wrekin Housing Trust and after registering on the Trust's choice based lettings system, chooseyourhome, Mrs Broom and her husband were told that they were eligible for one of the brand new 2-bedroom apartments on Aston Street in the town that they have lived in and loved for so long.

The couple used to be in the forces and say that this will be their first ever home of their own. Mrs Broom said "We got the confirmation on Thursday from The Wrekin Housing Trust offering us a flat in Wem. We are now ready to move but we still cannot believe it. The Trust has made our dream come true and we don't know how we can ever thank the people who have helped us stay in our beloved Wem."

The properties in Wem are part of the Trust's development programme covering various areas of Shropshire and Staffordshire, including Stone, Stafford, Ellesmere, Tilstock, Hinstock, Cockshutt, Market Drayton, Whitchurch, Bridgnorth, Shrewsbury and of course, Telford & Wrekin. More homes for rent in Wem will be available next year, as well as shared ownership properties later this year.
"George Rushgrove, Director of Business Development, added: "The Trust is pleased to have been able to help Mrs Broom and her husband to remain in the local area, as it is clear how much living in Wem means to them."
"Through chooseyourhome, our choice-based lettings system, Mr & Mrs Broom were able to look through all of the homes we currently have on offer, and choose the one they were most interested in."
