Family joy as new home is complete
23 October 2008
A family from Bridgnorth is celebrating after receiving the keys to their brand new, purpose built house in the town.
In a joint project between The Wrekin Housing Trust, Shropshire's largest social landlord, and Bridgnorth District Council a seven-bedroom house has been built on an area of previously unused land.
The house, situated in Wrekin Road, will be the new home of the Preece family. Sarah and Graham Preece have six children, two of whom are disabled, and were previously living in a three-bedroom house, which was unsuitable for the needs of the family. An Occupational Therapist raised the issue that the family needed new accommodation with Bridgnorth Council and after exploring the various routes available, it was decided that a new property would be the best solution. The Wrekin Housing Trust was then approached by the Council to provide the new home.
The Trust employed the Rok as builders for the site and the work took place over a seven-month period. The new house has a lift, seven bedrooms, a downstairs shower, an upstairs bathroom and has adaptations such as handrails and easy access for wheelchairs. Architects Hawkins McGowan designed the house so that when the family no longer needs the property it can be split in two, providing two more affordable homes in Bridgnorth.
Contract manager Greg Parton of Rok Birmingham said: "It has been a real pleasure to work on this project which will make such a difference to the lives of the family. We have worked closely with the Trust and the family have been frequent visitors so we know how excited they are about the move."
George Rushgrove, Director of Business Development at The Wrekin Housing Trust, said: "Things have never been easy for the Preece family but we hope that this new home with all of its special features will make daily life a little easier. The Trust is delighted to have worked alongside the Council and elected Councilors in Bridgnorth to bring this excellent project into being."
