Tenants get ‘hands on’ in Madeley
15 September 2008
Tenants from The Wrekin Housing Trust had the chance to get 'hands on' recently, at a special Repairs and Maintenance awareness day held at the Trust's training house.
Tenants from across Telford and Newport came along to Wendover, an empty property that the Trust uses for training trades people, to find out more about repairs and maintenance and have a go at DIY themselves.
The day began with a number of presentations, including: home security, from PC Fred Jones, Crime Prevention Officer and fire prevention from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.
These were followed by more interactive sessions such as handy hints and tips on decorating, from Trust decorator Matt Vandesande and a plumbing demonstration from Trust plumber Dave Moore.
The day was rounded off with an opportunity for tenants to try out their DIY skills, under the guidance of trained trades people. The DIY course is aimed at giving tenants the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to undertake all those small household tasks not covered within their tenancy agreements.
Trust tenant Lorraine Law, who attended the event yesterday, said: "I learned a great deal at Wendover, and thoroughly enjoyed the day."
Janice Diss, Customer Research Consultant at the Trust, who helped to organise the event, said: "This event was very popular with tenants. Due to the amount of interest received, we have arranged another session for 8 October, which is already fully subscribed. We are looking at arranging additional days, so any Trust tenants interested in coming along should give me call on 217248."
