Youth group helps tidy area

10 September 2008

Children from the Aqueduct area of Telford have formed a group to tackle issues that matter most to them.

The Aqueduct Youth Engagement Group was set up with the help of the Dawley and Hamlets Local Police team, The Wrekin Housing Trust, Dawley and Hamlets Parish Council and Aqueduct Primary School and is run by members of the group.
The group recently conducted a litter pick at the play area in Pageant Drive in Aqueduct as part of the national Big Tidy initiative. The play area is an important place for the group and the wider community so it was decided that it was a priority to remove any rubbish and make the area as welcoming as possible for people. The children worked hard to remove the rubbish and Majestic Stores provided them with drinks whilst they were working.
The litter pick is part of a series of events from the group. A sports tournament is planned where children and adults will be welcome to take part in a range of activities. Plans are also in place for a bulb planting session at the play area, which will make an attractive feature next Spring.
Community Support Officer Sarah Robinson said: "As the local CSO it is great to see that so many children and agencies are enthusiastic in getting involved in community projects to help clean the area up where they live and work. The litter pick was very successful as we managed to collect more bags of rubbish than we thought and the children who took part should be commended for their hard work. So many ideas have been put forward and we are hoping to continue this as a long running project with more activities being planned for the future."
If any children from the Aqueduct area would like to participate in future events they should contact Community Support Officer Sarah Robinson on 01952 216543.
