Support to help you pay your energy bills

There was good news today as the government announced further support to help with the cost of energy bills:

  • The energy price cap will be fixed at £2,500 a year for a typical home for two years from 1 October
  • Businesses will see their energy costs capped at the same price per unit - or kilowatt hour (kWh) - that households will pay under the government's new plans.

Despite these changes, we could all do with further support to help meet the cost of our energy bills. You might be able to take advantage of certain benefits, grants and help offered by the government and energy suppliers.

Cost of Living support payments

The government has announced some support packages to help with the soaring energy costs. Different support will be given to different groups, we’ll break this down below:

Everyone

Anyone who pays an electricity bill will get £400 taken off their energy account this autumn. This will replace the original offer of £200 which was going to be repaid over 5 years.

Pensioners

Anyone who is pension age on or before 25 September 2022 (born on or before 25/09/1956) will get an extra £300 in addition to the £200-£300 Winter Fuel Payment. This will be paid in November or December 2022 to your bank.

Disabled People

Anyone receiving a disability benefit (listed below) will get an extra £150 in September, this will be paid the same way as you received your disability benefit.

  • Disability Living Allowance; or
  • Personal Independence Payment; or
  • Attendance Allowance;
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment; or
  • War Pension Mobility Supplement
