Desmond qualified as a solicitor, who after a successful career in private practices, became an in-house Solicitor in financial services, and moved on to senior executive roles in operations and general management.

This included becoming Executive Director for Savings and Lending, and then Director of Residential and Commercial Lending for two major Building Societies, and Managing Director of Britannia Life in 1996, before becoming an Executive Director of a FTSE 250 media company (SMG plc) as the Managing Director of Publishing.

Desmond is the former Chief Executive of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland, and then of The Law Society.

Desmond has held a number of non-executive roles within national agencies and professional bodies, including Chair of the Taxation Disciplinary Board, Director of the Solicitor’s Indemnity Fund, Co-Chair of Queens Counsel Appointments, and Chair of Regulation for the institute of Actuaries, and Chair of RICS Nominations Committee. He is also a Non-Executive Director with a mutually owned digital marketing agency in the northwest of England – I-Com Intl Ltd, and Chair of Trustees of a local Charity, “Open Door Family Centre”.

Desmond has been responsible for corporate strategy and financial strategy throughout his career. He also has extensive experience of regulatory compliance, audit, risk management and governance. Desmond lives in Oswestry.
